Cape May County History
Middle Township
Whitesboro
Congressman George White of North Carolina
acquired seventeen hundred acres to develop his planned African-American
community. Attracting settlers was a slow process, as was attracting businesses
to provide job opportunities. Henry Spaulding and his family were first
to settle. Henry was appointed in 1900 by George White to be the administrator
and charged him with the responsibility of developing the new community.
Today Middle Township is comprised of
Burleigh, Cape May Court House, Dias Creek, Goshen, Mayville, Rio Grande,
Swainton, Whitesboro
