Cape May County History

Lower Township

Villas & Fishing Creek

In the 1920’s, Joseph Millman bought a farm in Fishing Creek which he sub divided and promoted a small development called Wildwood Villas. The Wildwood part of the name was dropped in 1931 when the Villas post office opened. Villas beach was the center of Cape May's caviar industry from 1899-1914.

Fishing Creek was one of the very early settlements in the county. Farms were established and lumbering became a major industry. (Earlier name was Teal Town).

Room from the William and Silas Matthews homestead

During the war of 1812 there were many casualties and the William & Silas Matthews homestead was used as a hospital – this room was carefully dissembled and reconstructed as part of the Cape May County Historical Museum. The room was donated by Joseph Millman, developer of the Villas.

Today Lower Township is comprised of Cold Spring, Fishing Creek, Erma, North Cape May and Villas
