Upper Township

Tuckahoe

Lenni-Lenape artifacts

Once named Williamsburg after John Williams, the first Postmaster in 1828, the town was later renamed Tuckahoe after the Tuckahoe tribe of the Lenni-Lenapes Native Americans.

The settlement once hummed with shipbuilding activities provided by the sawmills and iron making furnaces. Other early businesses included a canning factory and a silk mill. There are few remnants left to reflect upon the early businesses.

Costume circa 1840, worn by Mrs. John Stites of Beeley's Point.

Reading Railroad built a line from Camden to Tuckahoe in 1891 which extended to Sea Isle City in 1893.

Today, Upper Township is comprised of Beesley’s Point, Marmora, Marshellville, Petersburg and Tuckahoe.

Completion of main roads in Upper Township was 1707.
