Once named Williamsburg after John Williams,
the first Postmaster in 1828, the town was later renamed Tuckahoe after
the Tuckahoe tribe of the Lenni-Lenapes Native Americans.
The settlement once hummed with shipbuilding
activities provided by the sawmills and iron making furnaces. Other early
businesses included a canning factory and a silk mill. There are few remnants
left to reflect upon the early businesses.
