Lower Township

Town Bank

Some of the many whaling tools on display at the Museum.

Originally called Portsmouth Town, the first settlement in Cape May County founded by Long Island and New England whalers as early as 1640. The name Town Bank was given by William Penn and was the first and only settlement in the county for a time. Townbank became the first county seat when the county was officially formed in 1692.

The original Town Bank settlement was washed away by tidal action and storms.
Today, Town Bank is a residential community sharing the area with North Cape May as part of Lower Township.
