Cape May County History

Dennis Township

Dennis Township covers sixty five square miles and was created in 1826 out of territory from the southern half of Upper Township.

The township included the Dennis Creek community, the East and West Creek regions, the Southern portion of the Cedar Swamp, and the Seashore region between Townsend Inlet and Ludlam’s Bay. Dennis Township formally organized its government in March 1827.

Cedar Shingle-making tools

Large cedar forest and the swamp provided the natural resources for lumbering, shipbuilding, shingle making, and shipping. Some of those originals tools are on display in the Museum Barn.

Dennis Creek was the first town in the county to have its own post office, which opened in 1802, and was the main port for Cape May County for coastal shipping. From 1848 to 1901 at least fifty-six ships were built at Dennis Creek.

Today Dennis Township includes the communities of Belleplain, Clermont, Dennisville, Eldora, Ocean View, South Dennis and South Seaville
