Cape May

Victorian Pump Organ

Cape May City was originally called Cape Island; the name was changed to Cape May City in 1869.

After the fire of the 1860's, the city was rebuilt in the Victorian style of architecture. Cape May remains a mecca of Victorian architecture to this day.

The museum has an entire Victorian era room on display.

Steamship Republic

Cape May claims to be the nation’s oldest seashore resort. From the first settlers, Cape May's development has been geared towards summer residents and visitors.

Visitors from Philadelphia traveled to Cape May on Steamships. The trip took six to seven hours and cost one dollar.

Visitors from Virginia and points south traveld by coastal schooners to Cape May.

Cape May Point Lighthouse Lens

In 1863, the first visitors arrived by trains and that marked a new era in transportation.

West Cape May

West Cape May is a small community adjoining Cape May City. On April 17th, 1884 West Cape May was established from part of Lower Township. An African American population settled here early in West Cape May’s history.
