Stone Harbor and Avalon
Settlement of Barrier Islands began
between 1879 to 1900. Stone Harbor receives its name from an English Sea
Captain, Captain Stone, who managed while during a severe storm to find
shelter behind Seven Mile Island. Seven Mile Beach Co. bought the island
in 1887 but first proceeded to develop Avalon. It was acquired from Avalon
Development Co. in 1907 and became a borough in 1914.
The Tatham family purchased the island in early 1800s from the Seven
Mile Beach. They built a few beach houses for convenience of intrepid
excursionists who boated to the island. Then the island was bought by
the Seven Mile Beach Company in the 1880s. The name Avalon was chosen
from Welsh mythology, being place for the dead heroes, where King Arthur
was carried. Founded by a land development company, 1887. Incorporated
as a borough in 1891.
